Three people rescued from Springfield fire

The fire apparently began in the first floor laundry room

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A dramatic Springfield fire department rescue Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters rescued three people and their cat by ladder from their second floor apartment at 44 Orange Street in the Forest Park neighborhood.

Fire department spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News that the eight people living in the two and a half story wood frame home would be homeless if not for their landlord finding them alternate apartments on short notice.

Leger said the fire apparently began in the first floor laundry room. The cause was electrical.

Everyone was able to get out of the house quickly when they saw the thick black smoke rising from the building. Leger said the damage to the Orange street home was considerable.
