Springfield Thunderbirds won first pre-season game in overtime

The team faced off against the Providence Bruins

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Thunderbirds played their first pre-season game at the MassMutual Center on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds are Springfield’s American Hockey League and an affiliate of the Florida Panthers. A group of business owners bought the franchise and brought it to Springfield in May.

On Friday, the Thunderbirds beat the Providence Bruins in overtime, 2-1.

These games are real family events among AHL Hockey fans. Christopher Drouin of Springfield told 22News, “I come here every year with my family. It’s just a nice way to get out on the weekends with your family and spend some quality time with them.”

The Thunderbirds play at home again Saturday night, when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack. Click Here to find out how you can attend a game.
