Local Red Cross helping those in need from Hurricane Matthew

CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – Hurricane Matthew causes destruction across Florida the American Red Cross is helping those in need and local volunteers are helping out. Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Western Massachusetts are now in Florida. Three volunteers from our area are helping victims of Hurricane Matthew.

As of the latest update 22,000 people are being assisted in the 133 shelters the Red Cross has set up proving food and medical needs. Jennifer Garutti the Executive Director of the Red Cross of Western Massachusetts told 22News there are ways you can help as well.

“They can go to Red Cross.org and if they’re interested in donating we always need they’re financial assistance and if they’re interested in becoming part of the volunteer team of the American Red Cross they can apply to become a volunteer and get trained up and participate in the next disaster,” said Garutti.

Hurricane Matthew is now a Category 2 hurricane as it heads towards Georgia and South Carolina.
