Barn fire in East Longmeadow; cloud of smoke was visible for miles

The cause of the fire is under investigation

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A stretch of Somers Road (Route 83) in East Longmeadow was closed Thursday afternoon due to a barn fire.

The barn is located behind a house at 43 South Bend Lane, a side street off Somers Road. East Longmeadow Police Chief Jeffrey Dalessio told 22News that the call for the fire came in at around 1:00 P.M.

Our 22News crew could see the smoke from the fire from as far away as Interstate 91 and the Memorial Bridge in Springfield. The flames were controlled within an hour, but smoke continued to rise from the barn late afternoon.

As a result of the fire, Somers Road was closed in both directions between Hampden Road and Pease Road.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, told 22News that a Springfield fire engine was called in to help East Longmeadow firefighters. Wilbraham, Longmeadow and Somers firefighters were also there assisting the East Longmeadow Fire Department.

Chief Dalessio said, “The initial report was a barn fire and the fire department did a good job holding it to just the initial structure that was engulfed upon arrival.”

He added that at this time, it is not believed anyone was home at the time the barn caught fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
