AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – The cremated remains of more than 100 military veterans have finally been placed in a new, permanent columbarium on Tuesday, after being held in storage for months. They’ve been placed at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
The remains were in storage for months because the state was clashing with the construction company hired to expand the cemetery. David Martins of Holyoke told 22News the remains of his wife’s father were held since February, and they never received updates from the cemetery or VA.
“What they did to us, and I don’t even know who “they are,” has made this just twice as bad. So we’re glad this has come to a conclusion, and we’re glad we can finally put this to rest in our family,” Martins said.
The state says landscaping will be completed next spring. A formal ceremony will be held on Veterans Day.
