Local students discuss social issues in the community

Social media and drug prevention are among the topics discussed

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – High school students from across the county Tuesday night kicked off this year’s Youth Advisory Board.

The Youth Advisory Board is made up of 45 students, from 25 different schools, all with a common goal of discussing social challenges and issues that they face.

These students, along with Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni and his staff, addressed topics such as staying safe on social media, and drug prevention strategies.

Leahana Malone, a senior at Putnam High School, told 22News, “I’ve been able to be informed of other things in other communities that were going on that I was unaware of, even things in my own community that I was unaware of.”

Gulluni said this board helps him and his staff identify ways in which law enforcement officials, educators and elected leaders can address and solve some of the problems students face.
