Mercy Medical Center temporarily evacuated

The unattended pipe was found in the parking lot

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Arson and Bomb Squad was investigating an unattended pipe found in the parking lot of Mercy Medical Center in Springfield Monday evening.

Mercy Medical Center Spokeswoman Mary Orr said the “all clear” was given around 6:30 PM after a suspicious object investigation.

Springfield Police captain Robert Strzempek told 22News someone found an unattended pipe in the parking lot at around 5:00 PM.

Springfield Fire Spokesman Dennis Leger confirmed the object was two pieces of copper tubing taped together. Crews used a robot to determine it was not an explosive device.

Orr said the cancer center had to be temporarily evacuated.
