AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Action is being taken after it was revealed that more than 100 military veterans cremated remains were being held in a temporary columbarium for months, awaiting interrment at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
The state’s Executive Office for Administration and Finance confirmed Monday night that on Tuesday the remains will be placed in a new, permanent columbarium.
22News found out the state was clashing with the construction company hired to expand the cemetery.
The state said Monday that the project is 95% complete. All that’s left is landscaping, which will be completed next spring.
On Tuesday, the cemetery will be turned over to Veterans Services. A formal ceremony will be held on Veterans Day.
