Italian Heritage Month celebrated in Springfield

Italian Cultural Center planning month of events

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – October is Italian Heritage Month, and a celebration of that fact was held in the city’s South End Monday morning.

The Italian flag flies high above the Christopher Columbus statue at Main and Locust Streets, welcoming people to this neighborhood with strong Italian roots.

Mayor Domenic Sarno read a proclamation to a group of people gathered at the statue for Monday’s event.

Columbus Day is a week away, but the Italian Cultural Center has events planned all month long.

“We try and bring everything together in October, really highlight especially here in the city of Springfield and our Italian club, all the different events that we have going on,” said Stephanie Spolzino, President of the Italian Cultural Center.

The Italian Cultural Center will be holding its fifth annual Taste of Italy this Saturday night. The event, which is being held at the Cedars Banquet Hall on Island Pond Road, features food and wine from some 30 to 40 local restaurants. It will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
