HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is providing $15,000 in matching grants to organizations that want to help boost interest in recreational fishing within the Hispanic community.

The funds stem from a national initiative to support state and local efforts to educate and engage families in high-density Hispanic communities through programs, classes and fishing activities. The George W. Bush Vamos A Pescar Education and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation have made $100,000 available nationwide.

Applications for Connecticut’s program are due no later than 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 31.

To be considered for funding, eligible proposals from nonprofit groups must introduce fishing to youth and/or families; provide hands-on fishing skills development; teach and reinforce water safety; and provide hands-on conservation and aquatic stewardship activities.
