Knife pulled during fight in Springfield; 2 men arrested

Dennis Maddox charged with assault, Shakeem Butler arrested on outstanding warrants

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two men have been arrested following a fight near a State Street liquor store, in which police say one of the man went after another with a knife.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, another police sergeant was on patrol when he noticed a disturbance near the Benton Park Package Store.

Delaney says that the sergeant called for backup and approached the fight. One of the men was walking away. The man who stayed behind, 26 year-old Shakeem Butler of Springfield, told the sergeant that he was just assaulted with a knife.

That man who was walking away, identified as 47 year-old Dennis Maddox, was detained the by officers who arrived as backup.

Police spoke with witnesses, who said that during the fight, Maddox pulled a knife on Butler during the fight. The witnesses intervened in order to prevent a stabbing.

Meanwhile, Delaney says a police dog found the knife used in the fight, which Maddox had thrown away as police approached.

Maddox was arrested on a charge of assault by means of a dangerous weapon.

Butler had two outstanding warrants for his arrest- one out of Springfield for domestic assault and battery and threat to commit a crime, and another out of Chicopee for vandalizing property. He was placed under arrest as well.

Both Butler and Maddox will be held in police lockup until their arraignment Monday in Springfield District Court.
