Putnam students to receive training at MGM construction site

Program will give students opportunity to learn in real-world construction environment

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The MGM Springfield construction zone is becoming a hands-on classroom!

The Springfield Public Schools signed a memorandum of understanding with Tishman Construction, the contractor for the casino project. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy students will have the experience of working on a real, major construction zone, right in their city. The partnership will benefit the city, the students, and the contractor.

“Our students would have an opportunity to go there and learn, to observe, where Tishman would come here and help us with our curriculum, help align the curriculum, so what we’re teaching the kids is relevant to what’s required,” said Dave Cruise of the Regional Employment Board of Hampden County, Inc.

Five technical fields at Putnam are involved in this partnership: carpentry, electrical, heating and air conditioning, metal fabrication, and the school’s newest program- the construction craft laborers program.
