NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – FEMA is rewarding Northampton for their actions to reduce flood risks. Floodplain insurance policy holders will now receive a ten percent discount.
Northampton has been very active in reducing risks, doing far more than required by federal law. Mayor Narkewicz says the timing for this discount is perfect.
Congress is now putting pressure on FEMA to make the city’s flood insurance program more self-sufficient, meaning rate increases.
Mayor Narkewicz said, “Anything we can do to create a discount for our residents is a good thing in addition to the importance of reducing flood risk.”
New policies will be eligible for the discount starting May 1st of next year.
