SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two people, including a Massachusetts state trooper, were taken to the hospital following a crash on Interstate 291 in Springfield late Tuesday night.
State Police Sgt. Tom Ryan told 22News that at around 11:10 P.M., the trooper’s cruiser was struck from behind. At the time of the crash, the trooper had been working a construction detail on I-291 eastbound near Exit 5B.
The trooper was taken to Baystate Medical Center to be evaluated and treated, but has since been released.
Ryan says that the woman driving the car that struck the cruiser was trapped in her vehicle after the crash, and had to be freed by Springfield firefighters. She was also taken to Baystate Medical Center, but her condition is not known at this time.
State police are still looking into the cause of the crash.
I-291 eastbound was shut down for about two hours overnight while troopers investigated.
