SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) –  The cost of parking will no longer be an issue for fans attending the Springfield Thunderbirds hockey game. Mayor Domenic Sarno and Springfield Thunderbirds Executive Vice President Nathan Costa announced Wednesday that parking will be free for anyone attending a hockey game in downtown Springfield.

The free parking will be available on a first come-first serve basis, provided you have a ticket to a Thunderbirds game. Fans will be able to park for free in the Civic Center Garage, which is adjacent to the MassMutual Center.

Costa told 22News that this will help enhance fans’ experience on game nights.

“We have really put an emphasis on a game experience that is going to be enticing and affordable for everyone who wants to come to our games,” Costa said.

He told 22News that the Springfield Thunderbirds are one of the only teams in the American Hockey League that offer free parking to fans at their facility.

For those looking forward to taking advantage of the free parking, the Thunderbirds play their first home game on Saturday, October 22.
