CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – What’s described as a “tier one hazardous materials situation” closed a section of Exchange Street in Chicopee, Wednesday night.

Chicopee Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Crevier told 2News, “(It’s) high levels of CO in an apartment building due to a chemical reaction with cleaning supplies to clean pizza grates. Departments of hazardous material response just got here.” He said it would be a few hours before people could be let back in.

According to Chicopee Fire Captain Douglas Sanford, just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the department was notified of some sort of situation at 140 Exchange Street, which is where Paradise Pizza is located. When 22News arrived on Exchange Street, there was yellow caution tape across the entrance of the pizza shop.

Captain Sanford said it was a “Tier 1 Haz-Mat,” which is “an investigation and an assessment.” No one was hurt.
