SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Influenza kills 36,000 people across the country every year. That’s why doctors are advising you to get your flu shot now.
Flu season hasn’t officially started, but health officials say it’s a good idea to get your flu shot early this year. The sooner you get the shot, the sooner the protection starts, but it takes time to kick in.
Dr. Ira Helfand told 22News, he recommends you get a flu shot every year. “It’s a vaccine, it gets your body to make antibodies and it takes a while for your body to do that. So the more time your body has to respond to the vaccine and make the protected antibodies, the more protection you’ll have if you’re ever exposed to the flu.”
He said it’s the only way you can protect yourself from getting the flu. The flu vaccine has been available since August.
