WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The 54th class of the Western Massachusetts Police Academy held their graduation ceremony, Wednesday night, at West Springfield High School.

Each member went through 6 months training at STCC. The new officers will be stationed at police departments from Egremont to Worcester.

Joseph Casey of West Springfield told 22News the ceremony is what he and his fellow academy graduates have looked forward to for weeks. “I think with everything going on right now, we really want to help get the community back on board and make everyone come together.”

Casey added that he and his peers also received specialty training that teaches officers how to recognize and engage people suffering from mental illness.
