Wayfinding program to be set up in Northampton

A study last year found that the signage for parking needed to be improved

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton residents and city officials will meet Tuesday night to discuss setting up a wayfinding program. The goal is to come up with ways to better promote, brand and define Northampton to visitors.

There are three basic factors to the wayfinding program:

  • One is to help visitors find parking to increase local spending and reduce congestion. A study last year found that the signage for parking needed to be improved.
  • Two, it’s to help define Northampton’s brand. So, an example would be coming up with a uniform design for a sign welcoming people to the city.
  • Three, it’s to help orient visitors, get them to come again, and essentially increase their spending.

22News spoke with one of the consultants that will speaking at the forum on Tuesday, who said that they will also be focusing on making a social media presence. However, the forum is all about gathering input from the community about how to define the city.
