New barriers on I-91 already damaged in Springfield

The barriers separate the I-91 lanes from the I-291 lanes

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Several cars have already hit the new barriers just put up on Interstate 91 southbound in Springfield.

22News took a GoPro out on the highway Tuesday night, which you can see below, and saw that multiple barrier strips have been knocked down.

The barriers separate the I-91 lanes from the I-291 lanes. They’re designed to keep drivers from merging over into I-91 at the last second, to cut traffic.

Drivers understand the purpose, but said these barriers may be doing more harm than good. Chris Ayala of Enfield, Connecticut, told 22News, “There are reckless drivers around who are trying to get out of it. They used to cut off people by going around, but I’d say it’s a little bit of a risk.”

Springfield Police Captain Robert Strempek confirmed for 22News multiple cars have already hit the barriers, causing at least one crash.
