Crossing guard not seen helping Springfield middle school students

STEM Middle Academy said they were unaware there was any problem

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News took our cameras to a busy Springfield intersection only to find the assigned school crossing guard wasn’t there.

Two of Amneris Ortiz children attend STEM Middle Academy. She told 22News she’s only seen the crossing guard help high school students cross at Gaucher and State Streets at 2:20 p.m. She said the crossing guard isn’t there when STEM Middle Academy students get out at 2:50 p.m.

Michael Henderson, of Springfield High School of Science & Technology said, “I normally see him when I come out of school at around 2:20 p.m. Traffic is pretty crazy, but he actually does pretty well crossing us and stuff.”

Springfield Public Schools Spokeswoman Azelle Cavaan told 22News a crossing guard is assigned to that intersection until 3:15 p.m. every day.

Our cameras confirmed the absence of a crossing guard on Tuesday.
