EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Police in Connecticut have arrested a man who they say fled after causing a fatal car crash.

The Hartford Courant reports that 23-year-old Johnassis Melendez is being held on criminal and motor vehicle charges. Police say additional charges will be filed. It’s unclear whether Melendez has a lawyer.

Police say the crash happened Wednesday afternoon in East Haven when a car slammed into a utility pole near a Home Depot. Police believe Melendez was driving the car when it crashed.

One passenger, 27-year-old Gaitana Girgenti, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Police say Melendez ran from the scene after trying to help one of the victims. Police say an officer’s body camera captured Melendez’s picture before he fled.
