Expect traffic heading to the Big E today

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It is the first weekend of the Big E, and if you’re going to the fair, you certainly won’t be alone. Thousands of people are expected to head toward the fairgrounds every day, and from every direction. The construction on Interstate 91 in downtown Springfield, however, will make things a little different.

You can still get to the Big E by taking the Memorial Bridge to Memorial Avenue, but you cannot get off Interstate 91 to reach the Memorial Bridge directly.

You can also take the South End Bridge, and then go up Route 5 to the Memorial Avenue rotary. Alternatively, you can take the South End Bridge to Route 57, get off at Main Street (Route 159 north) in Agawam, and then cross the bridge to West Springfield.

You may also choose to take the North End Bridge, and follow Park Street westbound, and either take Union Street south to Memorial Avenue, or continue on Park Street, then turn left onto River Street.

Driver Peg Fitzpatrick of Springfield told 22News that traffic is expected, so plan ahead.

“It’s a ritual for them, they go every year and that’s what they do, they deal with the traffic. for those that are coming thru and dealing with heavy traffic. People have GPS. They have all ways to get around something. So use that, or deal with it,” Fitzpatrick said.

If you are approaching the Big E from the north, you can exit I-91 at Exit 13B and then take Route 5 southbound to the Memorial Avenue Rotary.

Travelers coming from the west can take Route 20 to South Boulevard, and South Boulevard to River Street.
