WARE, Mass. (WWLP) – Congressman McGovern announced on Friday that a $96,572 grant has been given to the Ware Fire Department from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The funds will help the department purchase all new protective gear. This will include new helmets protective hoods, bunker coats, pants, boots and gloves.
Chief Thomas Coulombe told 22News that their current gear is 10 years old and is no longer in compliance with national fire protection agency standards. “We’re having some failure rates of the protective clothing, which puts the firefighters at risk,” he explained. “So this was perfecting timing to receive the grant.”
All of the grant money will go towards buying new gear. It will pay for 39 sets of personal protective equipment, one for every person in the department. Chief Coulombe says that the new protective gear will help make sure firefighters stay safe as they work to keep residents safe from fires.
