CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Valley Opportunity Council opened their newest early education and care center in Chicopee Friday.

The VOC was awarded a 1-million dollar grant to build the Montgomery Street Early Ed Center. This is part of a 7.5-million dollar statewide effort to improve early education programs.

A 2011 study of Massachusetts childcare centers found that deficiencies in the buildings impacted the quality of learning. The goal is to create a safe space for all children.

VOC Executive Director Stephen Huntley told 22News, “Some children have serious difficulties at home, so this is a way to get them out of their home situation for a few hours in a safe and educational program.”

The new center can serve sixty preschoolers ages 2 to 5 years old and 26 after-schoolers ages 6 to 12 years old.
