WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Before you can enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of the 100th Big E, you must first navigate through traffic and detours.

Most people from far north and south of Springfield travel I-91 to get to New England’s Biggest Fair, but this year I-91 in Springfield is down to just one lane.

Director of Operations at The Big E, Gerard Kiernan, told 22News, “MassDOT has been very cooperative due to the construction on the 91 viaduct, they’re going to be using 17 variable message board that will be giving traffic updates in real time, which will also be giving alternate routes to the Exposition.”

The Big E will be updating people with live traffic conditions on their website and through social media.

Maggie Deforge of Agawam recommends staying off 91 near the construction; “Probably come down Route 5. I would not go on 91. South is a mess. I don’t go on it at all between Longmeadow and West Springfield I’d say.”

One popular way to get to The Big E without having to drive and park is by taking the shuttle. King Ward is not offering that service from the Holyoke Mall this year, but on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, they will be offering roundtrip service from the Enfield Square Mall just across the state line in Connecticut.

The Big E hopes to free up Memorial Avenue leading to the fairgrounds by moving employee parking to lots off-site. That will also free up parking spots for visitors.

The Big E recommends visiting on a week day to avoid the biggest crowds.
