Driver crashed car on closed on-ramp in Springfield

The closed on-ramp is on East Columbus Avenue

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts State Police investigated a single car crash in Springfield, Wednesday night, at a closed Interstate 91 on-ramp.

State Trooper Paul Sullivan told 22News a 63-year-old man from Leeds was confused by the construction and tried to drive up the closed I-91 on-ramp on East Columbus Avenue. He said the man hit the yellow barriers and the “Ramp Closed” sign.

The driver’s side airbag deployed, and the car sustained a lot of front end damage, Trooper Sullivan said. The driver was taken to Baystate Medical Center. No citations were issued.
