INDIAN ORCHARD, Mass. (WWLP) – A 66 year-old man is being charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of liquor, for allegedly striking a pedestrian with his car, and then driving away. Springfield police have also identified the victim of the crash as 51 year-old Harry Fernandez of Springfield.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, 66 year-old Robert Loranger of Springfield was arrested and charged at Baystate Medical Center, where he was taken after police located his vehicle.

Delaney says that late Friday morning, Fernandez was struck by a white Cadillac near 2223 Page Boulevard in Indian Orchard. The Cadillac did not stop after the crash, and police received a description of the vehicle.

Police provided first aid to Fernandez, who was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died.

A K9 officer spotted the car matching the given description on nearby Wrentham Road. Loranger was still behind the wheel of the car at the time, Delaney says, and there was damage to the car’s front end.

Loranger was taken to the hospital for injuries he received in the crash, and Delaney says he will be arraigned once he is finished with his treatment.

He is charged with motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
