AGAWAM , Mass. (WWLP) – Relief is on the way for the old Bridge that connects West Springfield and Agawam. The Morgan Sullivan Bridge spans the Westfield River near the Big E.
The state department of transportation has labeled the bridge structurally deficient, but still safe to drive across. MassDOT presented their design plans, and got input during a public hearing in West Side Thursday. MassDOT wants to replace and widen the bridge.
George Kelly, West Springfield City Councilor said, “That is the bridge that gets most of the traffic. It’s in poor shape. You can feel it vibrate over your car as you go over. The state had said it’s unsafe. I think we need to do something with it.“
MassDOT’s, Alwin Ramirez, Bridge project manager said, “the project’s been in the works since 2013, and the state just received federal funding to help make it happen.”
Construction’s slated to start in spring of 2018 and last three years.
