Two more hours of school a day for Holyoke students; no homework

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – There’s an interesting experiment in Elementary School Education going on in Holyoke this year.

Instead of going home at 3 O’clock, Kelly Elementary School students in Holyoke will go to school an hour earlier and either stay in school until 4:00PM or spend time at the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Club. However, they won’t have to do homework, an arrangement very much to their liking.

Kelly School Principal Jackie Glasheen told 22News she believes extra hours in school will be of greater benefit than homework assignments. “I personally cannot make a direct correlation between improved student performance and homework. What I can make a direct correlation is the more face time a student has with a teacher aligns with student performance increasing,” said Glasheen.

Principal Glasheen said she’s gotten reaction from all over the world, some of it positive, some critical but it’s a pilot program.

In the spring, she’ll measure the student performance results before deciding whether to extend her no homework and longer school days experiment for another year.
