Community breakfast celebrating 100 years of the Big E

The Big E will officially open its gates Friday, September 16

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The countdown to the Big E is on, and this year’s fair is expected to be bigger than ever before, celebrating the history of the Great New England State Fair.

big-e-centennial-breakfastOrganizers and community members attended a Centennial Community Breakfast on the fairgrounds, Wednesday morning, to kick off this year’s 100th-anniversary celebration.

The President of the Eastern States Exposition, Gene Cassidy, told 22News this year’s fair will give residents a look at how the Big E has developed and transformed over the past century. “We’ll have a large focus of the history of the fair in the Young Building. It will give people a chance to look back.”

big-e-breakfast-2Edward Shore Jr. of Agawam said, “I’ve seen it grow from a 7-day fair to a 17-day fair, which is absolutely fantastic.”

The Big E starts next Friday, September 16th, and runs through Sunday, October 2nd. A centennial exhibit will be on display in the Young Building, and will include pictures, memorabilia, and artifacts from The Big E over the past century.
