(NBC NEWS) – Ryan Lochte is expected to be suspended by the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming on Thursday.
According to a report from TMZ Sports, Lochte is being suspended for 10 months by both organizations.
The 12-time Olympic medal winner, along with three other USA swimmers, initially told police they had been held up by armed men posing as Rio police officers during the Olympic Games.
It was later revealed that Lochte made up much of the story. The incident caused a firestorm of media interest and resulted in a major black-eye for the United States Olympic team during the games.
The other three swimmers will also be punished, but not as severely as the Lochte.
Lochte will also not be able to compete in the 2017 World Championships in July.
