SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There were nine shootings in the City of Springfield, all within four days. One of those shootings took place a few blocks away from two elementary schools.
Saturday’s shooting on Melha Avenue was near the Alfred Zanetti Elementary and the Boland School. 22News called the schools to see if they’ve changed any safety protocols, but we haven’t heard back yet.
Over at the YMCA of Greater Springfield, not far from the Taylor Street murder, Dexter Johnson told 22News their staff are keeping clients safe by using techniques they learned at active-shooter training last spring.
“We’ve increased our number of walkie-talkies. We do have, and have always had, security at our downtown location in the afternoon and evenings to make sure the parking lots are safe, and those kinds of things,” said Johnson.
Springfield Police taught active-shooter training to 25 staff members after the San Bernardino shooting. Dexter said the “Y” is operating normally despite the shootings.
