Robbery suspect shot by police in New Haven

The suspect was involved in the overnight robbery

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Police are investigating after an officer involved shooting of a robbery suspect in New Haven Tuesday morning.

State police say detectives from Central District Major Crime are assisting New Haven police after an officer-involved shooting in the area of Church Street and Columbus Avenue around 6:30 a.m.

Police on the scene tell News 8 that the suspect, identified as 49-year-old Kenneth Palmieri, of Branford, was involved in the overnight robbery of the Xtra Mart in Guilford.

Police confirmed that the car, license plate, and suspect description did match Guilford’s description of the suspect in the robbery. Guilford police tell News 8 that no weapons were involved in the robbery and that the car was registered to a home in New London.

Police also believe that Palmieri then committed a street robbery in New Haven, after leaving Guilford.

Witnesses say Palmieri  had been smoking crack in his car on Chapel Street South when he was confronted by police.

State police say Palmieri suffered non-life threatening injuries and there were no reported injuries to the officer.
