SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A three hour standoff between Springfield Police and a man ended around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Springfield Police Captain Brian Keenan told 22News that the standoff took place on Lamont Street just after midnight.

Keenan said a call first came in for a suicidal man. When police got to Lamont Street, they saw a man with a hand gun on the porch. The man was pointing the hand gun and a rifle at police.

The Springfield Police tactical response unit was called in along with crisis negotiation, and they were out there for three hours. They were able to get the man to peacefully surrender.

A man was taken into custody, but police are not releasing his name at this time. He was taken to a local hospital for observation.

Keenan said the man will be charged with breach of peace with a dangerous weapon.
