Plastic bags & styrofoam bans proposed in Chicopee

The city attorney is now working to craft the language of the proposals

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The proposal to ban plastic bags and styrofoam in Chicopee comes as the city’s landfill is nearing capacity.

Chicopee City Councilor Tim Mclellan said the ban could help reduce the amount of waste. He also said residents who keep finding these bags in their trees or lawns, are fed up.

The city attorney is now working to craft the language of the proposals, so they can be voted on.

“We just scratched the surface,” said Councilor McIellan. “We have a lot of work we have to do within the law department to find out what we can and what we can’t do.”

Opponents, primarily small business owners, have argued the bans would hurt business.

Mclellan said it’s too soon to know when a vote could take place.
