Traffic at UMass as students move back in

There were several roads blocked off

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Labor Day weekend traffic was busy at UMass Amherst, as students moved back in. For drivers, the least anticipated thing about move-in day is the traffic.

There were several roads blocked off. From 7:00am to about 4:00pm Sunday afternoon, drivers were unable to go north on University Drive between Amity Street and Sunset Avenue. On Commonwealth Avenue, traffic was narrowed down to one lane, to allow students to unload.

One parent, Charles Sacks, told 22news that arriving early is key, saying “We knew this from last year, that we needed to be here early, but we got here and everything seems to be going really really smooth. We were in and out in 20-30 minutes, we’re done.

Traffic has been impacted since Friday, as returning students moved back into dorms. Drivers were encouraged to use Route 116, Rocky Hill Road and North Pleasant Street to get around the detour.
