Church closing in West Springfield

Many in the parish are expected to worship at St. Thomas the Apostle

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Bishop Mitchell Rozanski celebrated the final Mass at the church that was created eight years ago from the Former Immaculate conception and St. Louis De France parishes and the nearby St. Ann mission.

Parishioners cited declining membership and financial uncertainties with their sad decision to petition the bishop to close the house of worship that had provided them with so many lasting memories.

Richard Murray of West Springfield told 22News, “[My] family moved here when I was two, I made my first communion here, was confirmed here. Sad to see it close.”

The lack of growth at the West Springfield parish was underscored by a lack of young people for its first communion and confirmation classes.

With the closing of St. Frances, Xavier Cabrini, many in the parish are expected to worship at St. Thomas the Apostle, West Springfield’s remaining Roman Catholic Church.
