CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Operation “Anthropoid” remains one of the great mysteries of World War II.

Why were the allies so determined to assassinate notorious Nazi Reinhard Heydrich when they knew his death would set off horrendous reprisals? “Anthropoid” tells that story in grim and gritty detail. Even the underground thought it was too dangerous, if not altogether suicidal.

Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan head up a fine international cast as they plot Heydrich’s assassination in Prague, Czechoslovakia, a city utterly controlled by the Nazis. Their every move in public could turn to catastrophe. Their homeland was so infested with the enemy, you truly wonder what inspired them to complete their suicide mission.

The world watched as the Nazi war machine, with all of its frightening fury, unleashed everything it had to crush the perpetrators. “Anthropoid’s” emotions range from the heartbreaking to the soul stirring.

It’s a powerful piece of moviemaking all the way through. The director deserves credit for its realism, knowing full well there won’t be even one millennial in the audience, since there are no flying superheroes.

“Anthropoid” wins your respect with 3 stars. We need more history lessons like “Anthropoid,” just as a reminder.
