SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An SUV burst into flames when it crashed into a four-story apartment building in downtown Springfield late Friday morning.

Springfield Police Sgt. Roy Carter told 22News that there may have been a mechanical problem with the vehicle prior to the crash.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield fire commissioner, told 22News that a woman and two children were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

All of the residents of the building, located at 59 Maple Street, made it out safely. The fire was contained to the SUV and some nearby shrubs, Leger said.

Sgt. Carter says that police are seeing an increase in the number of accidents of this sort. Just Thursday, a car went off State Street near the library and hit a tree. No one was hurt in that incident.
