HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Interstate 84 eastbound is closed in Hartford, and only two lanes are getting by westbound near exits 48 and 46 due to a vehicle fire, as well as a shots fired investigation.

Heavy delays are building in the area as emergency responders work to extinguish the vehicle fire and clear the accident from the roadway. Delays have now stretched back about 2.5 miles past exit 43.

Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route heading into and out of Hartford.Connecticut State Police expect to have the accident clear within an hour, but the heavy backups will cause long delays through the area.

State Police would not comment if the car fire and shots fired investigation are related, or two separate incidents. They did indicate that there is no immediate danger to the public.

If you witnessed either the shooting or the car fire, or if you have any information that could help Troopers in their investigation, you’re asked to call State Police at 860-534-1000, or text TIP711 to 274637 with information.

At 11:25 a.m., Hartford police reported that the westbound side of the highway reopened. The eastbound lanes may remain closed for another hour to two hours.
