Greenfield firefighter taken to hospital after smoke shop fire

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There were dozens of firefighters on Federal Street in Greenfield, Friday night, who worked together to put out a fire at a local smoke shop.

Greenfield Fire Captain John Whitney told 22News the fire started on the first and second floors of The Enthusiast, a smoke shop at 271 Federal Street.

The fire traveled from The Enthusiast to the attached apartment on the 2nd floor at the back of the building. Captain Whitney said the tenant in the apartment was taken to the hospital. The tenant’s injuries were determined to be too severe for¬†treatment at a local hospital, and the tenant has since been relocated to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

22News also saw a Greenfield firefighter being carried away on a stretcher. Captain Whitney said that the firefighter was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. The firefighter was later released with only minor injuries.

Greenfield Police Detective Kevin Rowell told 22News the State Fire Marshall’s office has been called to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire departments from Bernardston, Shelburne, Erving and Northampton were called to assist. Federal Street was closed from Riddell Street to Haywood Street while firefighters cleared the area.
