(CNN) – Police are investigating after a New York woman was killed while on a run in Princeton, Massachusetts. At the same time residents are leaning on each other as they remember the victim.
It was a somber call to gather on a warm summer night. Hundreds in this small town uniting to light candles.
A local woman said, “We shouldn’t have to live in fear.”
To remember a young woman murdered in a vicious attack.
Justine Popik, High School Friend said, “She was really, really nice, very genuine person.”
A high school friend remembers Vanessa Marcotte as the girl who always had a smile.
Justine Popik: “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. Everyone really liked her. She was so smart and a really good person.”
A sad local woman mentioned, “We’re a community. You know, when one falls in our town, it hurts. It hurts big.”
The anxiety in town seems to grow as the mystery deepens. Two days later, and police still don’t know whether the 27-year-old was targeted or randomly killed when she went for a daytime jog near her mom’s house just hours before she was set to catch a train back to New York where she worked.
Police say they’ve gotten hundreds of tips, and they’re asking for more through an anonymous tip line set up specifically for this gruesome crime.
A local woman said, “This girl lived in New York and she came to Princeton and this happened? It’s just… This doesn’t happen in Princeton.”
