SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The flag of Ecuador was raised in front of Springfield City Hall, Wednesday, in recognition of Ecuadorian Independence Day. On August 10, 1809, a group of rebels began the fight to free their country from the Spanish Crown.
Ecuadoran Americans live in western Massachusetts, and celebrate their history and culture. “I think it’s the beauty of diversity. Being able to celebrate each other’s cultural differences, and then honor that so we can understand each other,” said Xiomara Alban of Springfield.
Alban said the Rebellion that started in 1810 ended 12 years later when Ecuador won its independence from Spain.
