Young Florida boy made world-famous by viral meme celebrates anniversary of father's successful kidney transplant.

(WTLV) You may recognize nine-year-old Sammy Griner of Florida from his photo that turned into the internet meme “Success Kid.”

Now he’s all grown up, and his family says he’s never embodied that title more.

Sammy’s dad Justin suffered from chronic kidney disease until last year when he got the call he had been waiting on for years– a kidney was finally available for a transplant.

The transplant was covered by insurance, but the prescription drugs he needed were not.

“If you don’t have the money and you can’t get your medications they won’t give you a transplant,” Justin says. “Because your body will reject the kidney without the medications.”

Sammy and his family set up a GoFundMe account using the “Success Kid” meme’s popularity and raised a whopping $100,000.

Justin credits Sammy with saving his life.
