Exercise and Think like an Olympian

Have confidence that the roadmap you've laid out for success is the right one

(CNN) – While you might not be a part of Team USA competing down in Brazil. Experts say you can adopt the mental techniques top athletes use to gain an edge. The 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are upon us.

While you might not be battling for gold, we got some tips from sports psychologists to make the most of your competitions and exercise routines.

Ignore the competition. That’s right, if Michael Phelps can be beaten, so can you. Keep the focus on yourself even when you’re in competition against others.

Embrace the butterflies. Those nerves, sports psychologists say, just mean you care and are ready to perform.

Connect your brain with success. World class athletes learn to associate peak performance with things like a certain song…or even a certain smell.

They then repeat these steps to get psyched for competition.

Finally, stick to the gameplan. Have confidence that the roadmap you’ve laid out for success is the right one. Don’t panic if you feel like you’ve fallen behind working towards a goal.
