Peoria City Councilwoman Beth Akeson defends series of controversial tweets targeting Black Lives Matter and "people ill-equipped to have children".

(WEEK) A Peoria, Illinois city councilwoman is under fire for controversial twitter comments that have some community members thinking she went too far.

Councilwoman Beth Akeson tweeted about the Black Lives Matter movement, saying she will never support it because of its divisiveness and saying that there would be less crime if ill-quipped people had fewer children.

“I don’t think Black Lives Matter is divisive at all. I think it’s sad that we even have to have something called BLM. It’s just an organization to remind people that we matter too. And there are certain things going on in our country right now that would suggest that people aren’t aware of that,” BLM supporter Chama St. Louis says.

Akeson has said her comments were taken out of context.

A group of community members plans to attend the next city council meeting to give her an opportunity to explain herself.
