New study raises concerns over safety at trampoline parks

The number of those hurt from home trampolines has stayed steady

(CNN) – They promise fun and fitness, but are trampoline parks the safest for you and your children? A new study is raising concerns about the centers. Spokespeople for the rapidly growing trampoline park industry, however, have something different to say.

Trampoline parks are growing in popularity, but a new study says that’s leading to a rise in trampoline injuries. According to a study in the journal Pediatrics, reported injuries at trampoline parks have risen from 581 in 2010 to 6,932 in 2014.

The number of those hurt from home trampolines has stayed steady according to the report’s authors.

The injuries can be serious. As his horrified family looked on in 2015, a Minnesota man ended up paralyzed after an accident at a trampoline park. Anthony Seitz’s family filed a lawsuit over the incident.

Tips for trampoline safety include using protective padding, avoid somersaults and flips, and keep a close eye on children.

The international association of trampoline parks, meanwhile, has responded to the study. In a statement, the group says with more than 50 million people visiting parks in North America in the past year, “there would naturally be an increase” in the number of injuries reported.

The organization says it’s committed to the safety and well-being of trampoline park visitors.
