WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of people lost power in West Springfield and Southampton Tuesday morning, as heavy rains poured over western Massachusetts.
Eversource Energy spokesperson Priscilla Ress told 22News that at around 5:00 A.M., the heavy rain caused some tree branches to make contact with power lines on South Boulevard. Those lines caught fire, and about 260 utility customers in the area lost power. South Boulevard was temporarily closed while repairs were made, and power has been restored.
In Southampton, Ress says that a tree came down on power lines on Middle Road, knocking out power to 116 customers. That outage was also restored in about two hours’ time.
Downed trees also caused power problems in the area of Massachusetts Avenue in Springfield’s Upper Hill neighborhood.
Outages were also reported in the Franklin County town of Colrain Tuesday morning.
