Police: The goal of ‘Night Out’ events is to build relationships

More than 10,000 communities participate in the national event

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents gather Tuesday night at the East Longmeadow High School to observe the National Night Out event.

The national event, which is against crime and violence, takes place in communities across the country. It allows police and residents to get to meet and get to know each other.

East Longmeadow Police Chief Jeffrey Dalessio told 22News the goal is to build relationships that will help curb violence. “When you go out into the public tomorrow, or the day after, it’s a good idea to take those ideas that you had tonight and put them into place, whether that’s helping your neighbor out in whatever shape or form that comes in.”

22News Reporter Sy Becker served as emcee for Tuesday’s Night Out event in East Longmeadow. More than 10,000 communities participate in National Night Out in all 50 states.
